My proposal for the creation of my magazine

From my research so far, I have gained initial ideas for my magazine such as the target audience it will be for, the colour scheme that it will have, the possible font type that will be used and the artists that my feature in it.
The genre that I am creating my music magazine on had been forward to me from my research from my target audience which was R&B / rap. This is because from my questionnaire the feedback I got from my questionnaire was mostly towards rap, however from the research I have done after receiving that information I found that most rap magazines do slightly involve the R&B genre as well.  It is also because the two selected genres appeal mostly to the teenagers and the younger community nowadays (which is my target audience). From this, I was then able to research artists and current products from the specific genre that may possibly be featured in my magazine. I have decided to feature up and coming artists and also popular artists at the moment because from my questionnaire, my target audience suggested that that is one of the things they look for in a magazine and what catches their eye. Popular artists such as Drake, Jhené Aiko, and Beyoncé are very successful artists that come under the two genres and have also been featured in music magazine similar to mine. All these features will be inserted into my magazine to promote it and engage the audience as well as make it more appealing to them to show a sense or relationship and aspiration. Consequently, it will encourage potential buyers to buy my magazine if it includes the features they have specifically asked for.
The magazine will hopefully consist of three to four colours to avoid any confusion and distractions from the content on the page. The colours that I have chosen are possibly white, purple and maybe black to contrast against the white and to emphasis the purple on the page, It will also make it more eye catching and therefore hopefully direct their gaze to my magazine if put on to a shop shelf next to the bestselling music magazines at the moment. The magazine will appeal to the audience if it looks presentable and neat and not to childish, the use of three colours in layout will make it look more professional and attractive. The font that I will use will be possibly be IMPACT and maybe in block capital as this will make it stand out and appeal to both genders.
The layout of my magazine will have a simple and consistent layout where I will keep the magazine masthead the same however change the colours on every different magazine to fit in with the colour scheme, there will be one main image on the front of the magazine.  The structure of the front cover will be spaced out so it doesn’t look congested and confusing where it will give non direct gaze.

Results of my research......

To give me the perfect idea of what my target audience would be and their interests are I created a questionnaire to gather enough information about them as possible, to help me create the best magazine for them. I asked 30 different people of different ages and genders various questions based on music magazines and general questions like their age and gender, which allowed me gather individual opinions from each person.  As my main task is based on a Music Magazine, my questionnaire had to created based on that, I asked specific questions in relation to my magazine for example the amount of money they spend on the magazine and what exclusive bits of information they enjoyed within the magazine they read e.g. interviews with artists and profiles of up and coming artists. I gathered information for various age groups which gave me I clear vision of what music Magazines are enjoyed by all age groups but also the ones that are most relevant to the one that most people picked.  I displayed my information from my research using Microsoft Excel which showed the percentage of which one of the answers to each question was most popular and what specific target audience I was going to aim my Magazine at. With this information, I was able to work out how to ideally lay my magazine out and what colour combinations and also font would be most attractive to my target audience. It also gave me the genre of Magazine it would be. For example if it was Reggae that was the most popular the colour scheme would more than likely been other (Red, Green and Yellow). Whilst gathering my information I thought it would be appropriate that I offered my magazine to my target audience that would fulfil all that they have asked for and that what I will produce will meet their personal standards and will ensure that potential buyers will buy it and give me the best possible outcome.

These pie charts show the number of people taking part in my questionnaire. I handed out my questionnaire to 30 people of different ages. The most common age group was 14-17 years old which gives me an clear idea of which age group my magazine will be aimed at. The pie chart consists of 19 14-17 year olds which was the highest age range of people, next was 13 and under with 6 people. After that it was both 22-30 and 40-50 with the same amount of people being in it which was 3.

This graph shows the number of people and their genders. I handed my questionnaire out to a different number of males and females which would gave me a clearer result of who I would aim my magazine. The graph shows that more females were asked than males (19:15), however, even though more females were asked it doesn’t mean that I won’t be aiming my magazine at males because I will be. On the other hand, having an equal amount of males and females would allow me to compare both genders’ results and to look more into their music interests and magazine choses.

This graph demonstrates the different genres that people chose from out of a wide variety of music. From gathering these results, the most popular music genre that people chose was rap and was closely followed by pop. This evidence shows how people live and the way they present themselves in everyday life, it also effects the way this current generation act and dress. From this research, it has shown me what target audience my magazine will be focused towards and what genre it will be, which I think will subsequently be more effective and successful.

From this research, I have now confirmed a responsible price for my target audience who are willing to purchase my magazine for which is around about £2.50 to £3.00. The results show me that the price most of the people I asked was between £3.00 to £3.50, however I think having my price range slightly lower will interest more buyers as it will be more affordable for a lager range of people to buy as not many people have a lot of money at the moment due to the recession.

The name of the magazine is very important because that is what people look for. From the results of my research through this question the top name was vibe and the least picked was Allure. I agree with what my target audience have said as I believe the name will well suit the genre type and styling of my magazine. However, this name has been used already but I will use the research to think of a name that is similar in length because vibe is quite short and snappy, and that is 'trending' in the current use of 'youth slang', which i believe will be best suited to the age range of my target audience.

I deliberately put these two questions into my questionnaire because I wanted to know what colours and font attracted people into buying magazines. The most appealing colours for the magazine were purple and white and were closely followed by blue and orange. And the most attractive font was impact.   I agree with  the decision my target audience have made because  the colours appeal to both male and female  and depending on the shades of the colours I choose , it will be imply boldness  of both the colour and font , and hopefully stand out against other music magazines.
